The federal government has widened the scope of its crusade against the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus in the workplace with the inauguration of the Ministerial Local Committee in the Ministry of Transport with the relevant agencies in the aviation subsector of the country’s transportation sector represented.
The move is against the backdrop of recent statistics about prevalence of HIV/AIDS which shows the Transportation sector as one of the vulnerable sectors for the spread of the deadly disease.
Therefore, in the fight against the spread of the virus, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has classified the aviation sector as one of the social intervention sector.
This is due to its mandate in policy formulation, oversight of large number of both public and private workforce and other allied businesses. Accordingly, the World Bank and NACA have ranked the sector as the third among 13 workplace critical sectors in the fight of HIV/AIDS.
The mandate of the Local Committee is to enable a comprehensive social intervention approach to the fight for better productivity and collaboration with stakeholders to mitigate the effect of the virus in the sector.
As a first step towards giving the Committee teeth, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Parastatal Action Committee (PAT) was inaugurated recently by Mr. SUD Maigana, HIV/AIDS Project Coordinator in the Federal Ministry of Transport.
